Der BinaxNOW Streptococcus pneumoniae Antigen Card von Abbott wurde für den professionellen Einsatz in Laboren, Kliniken und Notaufnahmen entwickelt. Der Schnelltest ermöglicht eine schnelle qualitative Detektion von Streptococcus pneumoniae-Antigenen aus Urinproben bei Pneumonieverdacht sowie aus Liquorproben bei Verdacht auf bakterielle Meningitis. Die Auswertung erfolgt visuell über das Testfenster oder optional mit dem DIGIVAL Reader zur standardisierten Interpretation lateral-flow-basierter Tests. Serotype distribution and coverage by pneumococcal vaccines in hospitalised adults with pneumococcal pneumonia in Germany (Karssen et al., 2026)

Between 2022 and 2024, Streptococcus pneumoniae was the leading cause of adult CAP hospitalizations in Germany, detected in 16% of cases. The 21-valent vaccine V116 demonstrated the highest potential coverage at 87%, compared to 76% for PCV20 and 53% for PCV15. Although V116 appears to offer a broader serotype coverage than PCV20, the difference was not statistically significant in this interim analysis. Nonetheless, the results suggest that incorporating additional adult-specific serotypes into future vaccination strategies could further reduce the healthcare burden of pneumococcal pneumonia.
